Importing artwork in the United States of America
The US has gone a long way in their effort to mentor and protect the work of small artists. They have, indeed, implemented special regulations encouraging the importing of some artwork.
Chapter 97 of the North American Free Trade Agreement Implementation Act (Pub. L. 103-182, 107 Stat. 2057), also known as the Customs Modernization or “Mod” Act regulates such importing. As the total number of prints of each edition is under 75 (including the Prova d'Autore) and each image is printed and coated by hand, the importing of Mantinieri prints falls under the 9702.00.00 heading and, therefore, are free of duty. As requested in the U.S. Custom Border Protection, the prints shipped into the US are accompanied by the appropriate declaration by the artist for importing free of duty under chapter 97, subheading 9702.00. Such heading is also specified in the invoice. Therefore, no duty is due for importing Mantinieri's artwork in the United States.
